Secrets of Osh Bazaar: How to Shop Like a Local
Osh Bazaar is not just a market, it is a real oriental tale and the quintessence of Asian flavor right in Bishkek. Here you can find absolutely everything: from fresh tandoor bread to miniature felt yurts.
Bargain politely: In Kyrgyzstan, bargaining at the bazaar is a part of communication culture. Always ask friendly: "Jokpu?" (No discount?) or simply ask to round the sum down. If you buy a kilogram of dried fruits or souvenirs, they will gladly drop 10-20% off the price.
What to try and buy: 1. Kurut — dried salty balls of strained sour milk (a great sour snack for the road). 2. Local nuts and dried fruits (almonds in shell, dried melon, walnuts from the relic forests of Arslanbob). 3. National drinks (maksym, chalap) from the Yandex brand, poured from barrels on the streets.
Where to find value: The highest prices are in the rows located closer to outer roads. Go deep into the food pavilion or pass into the covered spice rows. Prices there will be much lower, and the choice will be richer.
